A Postpartum Doula provides support to families as they bring their newborn home. The approach of a doula is to bring non-judgmental nurturing and physical and emotional assistance. There are many ways Doula’s approach this work so it is important that families find someone who feels like a good fit for their needs.
What does a Postpartum Doula do?
While in your home some shifts will sometimes consist of primarily holding/caring for baby while the parents rest while other times it will be more of a supportive role to the parents and any additional siblings. Doulas are often trained to assist with proper breastfeeding techniques, offer information on breast pump use, care and storage of milk. We can bottle feed during the night and provide information on different types of bottles. Promote parent-baby bonding. We can answer other newborn care questions. The doula is also available for the partner and other family members who can benefit from the guidance. Other services you may see (as long as baby is asleep, calm or being worn) include, assistance with baby wearing, light housekeeping such as home organization, laundry and dishes, meal preparation, tools and product recommendations and assistance with referrals as needed.
What does a visit look like?
Each visit will be a bit different but always starts with a check-in to hear parents and caregivers concerns and questions.
